Remember, starting July, plastic bags will cost 25 fils

There are several reusable and environmentally friendly alternatives.Starting in July, all single-use shopping bags in Dubai will cost 25 fils each.

It is thought that imposing a fee on single-use bags will motivate shoppers to bring their own reusable shopping bags to transport their purchases. Many outlets across the city are providing various options for reusable bags.

In Dubai Production City, Carrefour opened its first BIO concept shop in March with the goal of facilitating consumers’ access to environmentally friendly and sustainable goods.

Carrefour is offering natural starch bags instead of single-use plastic bags, including reusable bags for 50 fils, weaved bags for 2.50 Dhs, and robust juco bags for 11.50 Dhs. This is done to further promote sustainability and limit the usage of plastic bags.

While Waitrose & Partners UAE will phase out all single-use plastic bags from stores and has created a line of reusable bags, Spinneys is also providing a reusable tote bag and a 25 fils discount to customers who bring their own reusable bag.

According to a previous announcement by Dubai Municipality, “[single-use] alternatives can have a higher environmental imprint than plastic bags,” therefore the bag fee is not just for plastic bags.

There will be no restriction on the number of bags that can be purchased, and the price per bag, regardless of size, will be 25 fils.

Any single-use bag that is 57 micrometers thick and manufactured of plastic, paper, biodegradable plastic, oxo-plastics, or plant-based biodegradable materials is covered by this regulation. There are many shops all across the city that sell reusable bags.
